Zespół AGNESIS

Dear fellow Polonian,

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

It is once again time to renew your membership in the Polish American Cultural Center honoring John Paul II. For those who are not members of the Center, we hope you will join us in our mission to preserve and promote Polish traditions and culture in the Cleveland area.

We had a successful year in 2009 and we continue to be optimistic about our future. We had a number of events such as celebrations of Polish Constitution and Independence Days. Our biggest event of the year was the reception held to honor our living veterans of the Polish Armed Forces in World War II.. We hosted several receptions and a number of dinners including one for Kościuszko Foundation, Ohio Section. Our celebration of Wigilia and the showing of Jasełka by the children of the Polish school were a big hit with the public. We sponsored the appearance of Eleni and Ich Troje, the artistic groups from Poland. We also held First Polish Youth Talent Show. We continue to have Sunday lunches which have become very popular among Polanians as a Sunday get together. (more…)

The Cleveland Foundation welcomes Polish-American Cultural Center!

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Polish-American Cultural Center in Honor of John Paul II has reached yet another milestone; in May 2009 Polish-American Cultural Center (PACC) established an organizational endowment fund at the Cleveland Foundation.  The foundation want to thank the board of directors of PACC for the trust you have placed in the foundation.

So what does this mean to PACC and its supporters?  An endowment fund is a fund set aside to generate income as well as for long-term use for the not-for-profit organization.  Having a strong and stable endowment fund is a sign that an organization is fiscally responsible and prepared for whatever the future may hold.  It can also ensure that the mission of an organization can continue in perpetuity if needed.

Why Eugene Bak?

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

The government of the Republic of Poland has honored Eugene Bak, cofounder and long time President and Executive Director of the Polish-American Cultural Center in Cleveland, with the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. We can read the following about such orders and distinctions in a law of the Sejm from October 16, 1992:

„Article 13. The Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland is an award for distinguished merit in the field of cooperation between nations. The Order is presented to a foreigner or Polish citizen living abroad whose activities have made a significant contribution to international cooperation and cooperation linking Poland with other states and nations.” (more…)

Legacy of Adam Grant

Friday, January 5th, 2007

The tragedy of great artists, says Peggy Grant, is that they live only during the time that they work, and when they pass away, their creation dies with them if they have no one to pass on their way of seeing the world.  She never wanted this fate to befall her husband, Adam Grant, and therefore she continues his work in her own special way identifying with his creation, presenting it to the world by traveling to various Polish centers to talk about Adam Grant’s life and art.  He has remained alive in this way and by her side.

We were fortunate to have been visited by Mrs. Grant in the Cleveland Polish American Cultural Center on January 5, to hear her speak about Adam Grant and view his work in a slide show presentation.

Addio, Thamos! – Opera Circle

Thursday, June 8th, 2006

Opera Circle brought its 10th Anniversary Season to closure with the Concert Addio, Thamos! presented at the Polish-American Cultural Center on Sunday, June 4, 2006. Reminiscent of the opera Thamos, King of Egypt, the concert eschewed the size but expanded the circumference of the event. While dedicated as a gift to Father Jerzy Kusy for his invaluable presence at St. Stanislaus Church (presently concluding), the concert also celebrated another great year of fruitful cooperation between Opera Circle and the Polish-American Cultural Center. What a wonderful record!

My Nikifor – Cleveland International Film Festival

Saturday, April 8th, 2006

Those who like stimulating exchanges of ideas or just to make small talk in their native tonuge recently had a chance to discuss art in our discussion club. The club operates under the auspices of the Polish-American Cultural Center. When talking about art and beauty, everybody has his opinion but all agree about one thing: art is just a means of communication used by the artist to deliver his vision of reality to an audience. ”Good” art, in any form, lets the recipient feel the emotions of the artist. Empathize his mood and intentions. Since my college years, I was interested in the influence of art on human behavior. It was then that with pleasure, I agreed to a request by PACC that I prepare an introduction to discussion at the reception in the art gallery “Spaces” honoring the movie “My Nikifor”, shown during the 30th International Film Festival in Cleveland.

Lukasz Waszczuk and Polonia youth

Thursday, December 1st, 2005

This past June marked the annual conference of the Polish Institute of Sciences and Art (PIASA) in Pittsburgh.  A Cleveland delegation from the Polish American Cultural Center presented a plan to rebuild Cleveland’s Polish-American community.   While the presentations are a regular feature of the conference, this year’s was particularly outstanding because the PACC’s delegation was made up of Ben Stefanski,  Agata Foremska, Lukasz Waszczuk and Slawomir Twarowski.
Ben Stefanski spoke with his usual commitment and passion of programs and projects to restore the Polish-American neighborhood in the city of Cleveland. As Agata, Lukasz and Slawomir reported on the efforts of the young people in the Polish American community in Cleveland, they were met by enthusiastic applause from the conference attendees. (more…)

The Theater of Great Actresses

Tuesday, November 1st, 2005

On October 22, 2005, the Polish-American Cultural Center hosted a performance of a play “Helena – Thing About Modrzejewska”. Even now, while I write these words, I am unceasingly impressed by the magnificent one-person play. This particular perception was caused by two factors –  the content of the play and a deep interpretation of the monodrama by Maria Nowotarska.

The author of this biographical play, Professor Kazimierz Braun, put into this text almost everything about the life and work of the diva of the Polish and American theatrical scene, Helena Modrzejewska, who used the name Modjeska (1840-1909) outside of Poland. The text of the monodrama described Modrzejewska’s earlier and later problems. She was an illegitimate child, a mother of an out-of-wedlock son, and a poor actress learning her trade in traveling troupes. In time, her work brought her great stardom and her marriage to an aristocrat, Karol Chlapowski, assured her social status. (more…)
